Szymon Stefanek 04 Feb 2001 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Rukkukah solo transcription (from the original "Hard Hat Area" recording by Allan Holdsworth). Last night I wrote down this exellent solo: this is a guitar challenge :) It is a pain to write all this stuff in ascii...so I have included only the tab transcription of the notes. The tempo and dynamic changes must be guessed from the orignal tune listening. Anyway , I have tried to separate the solo in "logical phrases", so it should be easy match them in the song. Some parts are impossible to play at the Allan's speed... don't get angry on it :) He is not human from my point of view... The last few phrases of the solo are missing (half of the last turnaround): I've just stopped transcribing to tab there: if you get to play the first part as Allan does, well, you're able to track down the last 15 secs of this solo by yourself :). Some phrases require a lot of hand stretching and the positions are arranged for my personal taste... I suggest you to rearrange the physical position of the notes on the guitar neck, you might find better ones... Since the scale changes and chords are not always "aligned", instead of the "background" chord, sometimes you will find the scale that best matches each phrase (still from my point of view). The vertical lines in the tab indicate chord changes and not measure separation (well, often it happens to be the same). Be sure to view this tab with a fixed size font. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you have any comment, update or correction to report, do it by sending a mail to . I'm also interested in other Allan's solos transcriptions. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Chord sequence: You can play this solo over the following (*really* simplified) sequence of chords. Allan's band juggles a lot with it. Each turnaround is 27 measures long. Repeat 3 times: Fm maj7 | Fm maj7 | Fm maj7 | Fm maj7 | Am | Am | Am | Am | F#m | Bm7 C# | G | F (maj7) | Gm | A | D (C#m7) | Fm maj7 | Fm maj7 | Fm maj7 | Fm maj7 | F#m | Bm7 C# | G | F (maj7) | Gm | A | D C#m7 | A | The first time it is played it comes from the "bridge lick" (that is also the intro). The chord tagged as Fm maj7 is not exactly an Fm maj7 : this is just my "trick" to rappresent it in a simple way. In fact, the solo begins with an ambiguous chord in Fm maj7 climax: the bass line seems to be based on E and F notes... but is quite "out of the lines"... it often touches B that makes the F look like a diminished one... I can't guess the exact keyboard line, I'm only sure that two of the notes played are D and G (And maybe Eb and E). Also Allan often uses F melodic minor and F diminished scale here. All this mixed up would give me a F melodic minor scale plus a raised 4th and a minor 7th (1 2 3b 4 4#/5b 5 6 6#/7b 7) that builds up a Fm maj7 11# 13# (?) I'm not so theory-addicted to lookup the really correct name for this "sound" ,so actually for me it is "An ambiguous chord in Fm maj7 climax" Good luck :) Szymon Stefanek ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ruhkukah : Guitar solo Fm maj 7 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -15-14-------17-15-------17-18---17------16-15----13-14-15------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------13-12-------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------14---12-10-14------ ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- F melodic minor scale Am --------------8-10-12-8---8-12-8-/15-12-12-13-15/17-----12---|--------------------------- ---------9-11-----------9----------------------------------13|15----13-15-17------------- -10-9-10-----------------------------------------------------|--------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------|--------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------|--------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------|--------------------------- sl. slow slide staccato--->legato F#m ------------------------------------------------------------------------------|---------- -/13-12-10---(10)\8-10-10--(10)\\\5--(5)/8-7-6-5------------------------------|---------- -------------------------------------------------7-6-5-4----------------------|---------- ---------------------------------------------------------7-5-3-----------3-5-7/9--7------ ---------------------------------------------------------------7-5-3-5-7------|---------- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------|---------- Bm7 C# chord G chord C# scale C scale ----------------|9-10-------------9-10-12/13----------------10-12-14/15-14-12------------ ---------9-10-12|---------9-10-12--------|----------10-12-14--------|--------15-12-10---- -----6-9--------|------------------------|--------------------------|-----------------12- -6-7------------|------------------------|--------------------------|-------------------- ----------------|------------------------|--------------------------|-------------------- ----------------|------------------------|--------------------------|-------------------- F Gm -15--13-10-|----13-10--------------------------------13-|-------------------------------- -----------|-15-------15-13-10\8------------------------|-11----------------------------- -----------|----------------------12-9-7----------------|-------14-12-10----------------- -----------|-----------------------------10-------------|----------------12-10----------- -----------|--------------------------------------------|----------------------12-10----- -----------|--------------------------------------------|-------------------------------- (The following lick rocks! Approx 22-24 secs of the solo tail are missing. At this point you should be able to write it down by yourself: you have a funky fast lick similar to the "explosive" one at the beginning of this turnaround, and a few "juggles" to track down. Again , Good Luck :) ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Szymon Stefanek 04 Feb 2001
